Ready to design your own tattoo? Good. But before embarking on the actual process, let me warn you beforehand that designing is a slow and tedious process. If you want to rush through this part, then chances are that you will end up regretting what you have done.

Creating a tattoo from nothing will require a lot of thinking, brainstorming and a lot of adjustments and fine-tuning before the actual tattoo design takes shape.

Question yourself

Lets start with some basic questions. What made you decide you want a tattoo? Is it a sudden event that occured? A tragedy? A celebration? Or is it that you want to get one in memory of a dear friend? Or are you getting it to just show off your masculinity or feminity or some physical or mental trait of yours? Or is it just because you always wanted a tattoo?

Brainstorm

Next, think of the answers you got and just try and imagine what kind of pictures would do most justice to the reason for your tattoo. Would an intricately designed rose do? Or would an aesthetic arrangement of flower petals spelling out a dear friend’s name appeal to you? Or would you want to have a fierce tattoo with a demonic face, rising waves, a smiling face with your friend’s initials, a campfire and so on and on and on. Just sit down and think up some ideas. Better still, jot them down. Even better, make a rough sketch(don’t worry, this is not going to be your tattoo!! Its just the beginning). Just spend some time on the thinking part, you will be amazed at your sheer creativity! What we are trying to do here is just build a basic design to further work on.

Use the power of the Internet

Now, you might have trouble just coming up with possible designs out of thin air. Is that the case? No problem. The internet is here. Use it. Search for tattoo designs on Google. You could even use Google image search. Flash designs are always a good place to start with. Even if you do not want to get a flash tattoo done, just looking at some of them might send in an avalanche of ideas. Did you find a tattoo design that you liked? Or did you find a tattoo that matches pretty well with the pictures you had in mind earlier? Yes? Good. Then take a print out of the tattoo design you found (though many people just download and print, it is always better to make sure you are not violaiting any copyrights).

Do not hesitate to ask for help

Not all of us born with the gift of creativity. If you are having problems coming up with ideas, do not hesitate to take the help of people around you. Your friends, family or even a professional artist might just provide you with the spark that might result in the shaping of your ideal tattoo. Infact, some pros are so skilled, they could just listen to your needs once and come up almost instantly with a beautiful freehand drawing that could blow you off your feet. Just make sure you approach them armed with the results of all the preliminary research mentioned earlier in this article.
